Tutorial 5 of 7

Export WAV, MIDI and MP3, and share your music

Intermediate 7 min

Render a seamless WAV loop or the whole song, download a General MIDI file, convert to MP3 with a fade-out and streaming loudness, and share projects as files or links.

Tonegrid has three kinds of output: audio you can listen to anywhere, MIDI you can open in music software, and the project itself to keep editing later or share.

Audio files

Open Export → Audio file (WAV, MP3, OGG …)….

  • Range: Current pattern, one full loop renders exactly one cycle, cut so it loops seamlessly in other software. Whole song arrangement renders every part in order plus 1.5 seconds for the last notes to ring out.
  • Format: WAV (made in your browser) is created entirely on your device; nothing is uploaded.
  • MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Opus, M4A (AAC) or FLAC are produced by the site's Audio Converter.
  • Fade-out at the end (seconds) adds a smooth ending using the Audio Cutter & Merger.
  • Loudness matches a target with the Audio Loudness Normalizer: Streaming (−14 LUFS), Apple Music (−16 LUFS) or Broadcast EBU R 128 (−23 LUFS).

The box under the options always tells you whether the export stays in your browser or is sent to the usefulweb.site server, and how long the result will be. Server files are deleted after about two hours.

Press Export. When the file is ready it downloads, and the dialog offers Download again and, when another premium app accepts audio, Open in another app….

Exports are limited to five minutes and 8,000 notes and drum hits. A very long polyrhythm cycle (for example 31 against 32 steps at a slow tempo) can exceed that; Tonegrid explains which limit you hit.

MIDI files

Export → MIDI file: current pattern or MIDI file: whole song downloads a Standard MIDI File:

  • the melody on channel 1 with a matching General MIDI instrument (for example a celesta for Soft bell),
  • the drums on channel 10 with General MIDI percussion keys — kick 36, snare 38, closed hi-hat 42 and so on,
  • tempo and swing included; muted grids left out.

Drag it into any DAW or notation program and replace the instruments with your own sounds.

Project files

  • File → Save project file (Ctrl+S) saves a .tonegrid.json file. In Chrome and Edge, later saves go to the same file; other browsers download a copy.
  • File → Save as… always asks for a new file.
  • File → Open project file… (Ctrl+O) opens one again — also files from older Tonegrid versions.

Projects are also saved automatically in this browser. File → Recent projects… lists them, with buttons to open or delete each one.

File → Share link… creates a link that contains the whole project. Anyone who opens it gets their own copy in Tonegrid — nothing is uploaded, the music is inside the link itself. Very large projects make very long links; the dialog warns you when a file would be the better choice.

Next: Play Tonegrid with the keyboard.
